Focal Point and October Review Templates

Liz has some fun new templates in The Market! As always, the "Fresh Fruit" new releases are 20% off for their introductory week - discount valid through November 5, 2015.

I asked Liz for some templates I could use for scrapping things like nature hikes or museum visits - something with a feature photo and some smaller photo spots off to the side. She did not disappoint! Focal Point Templates all have a large masked photo surrounded by some smaller photos, as well as as some simple flower embellishments and layered paper backgrounds.

And here are your October in Review Templates - perfect for scrapping a quick look at your month, an event, or even daily life.

Scattering Scatters

Hi Everyone! This is Jenn, jk703. I hope you are all doing well. It's October, and the beginning of fall here - leaves are changing, some cooler temperatures have arrived, and there seems to be pumpkin everywhere! I am not a huge pumpkin fan, but we do head out to the pumpkin patch every year.

While working on a layout from our pumpkin patch visit, I found a fun tidbit that I find myself doing when creating layouts, and using scatters. So, I'm here to share!

Liz has some perfect scatters that you can use for any kit you are working with - and they will match perfectly! LOL! Especially since it is a template! Check out the Scatter Starters - perfect and fun shaped. For my layout, I used these - in the arrow shape. For my example images, I've also used the Forever Joy Hello Fall kit.

Here is my layout... with some scatters under the image. Liz's scatters came with three layers, I just turned off one layer.

I have my green arrows selected in the layers palette, and I'm going to use the Rectangular Marquee tool.

Note that if your scatter is really close to other pieces of the scatter, or you want to move multiple parts of the scatter, your best bet tool wise is the Polygonal Lasso Tool (the one right below the Rectangular  Marquee Tool on the Left Tool Menu).

Here, you can see I used the Marquee Tool to make a square around the one green arrow. All you have to do is click, drag your box, and then let go.

My box of marching ants overlaps the yellow arrow, but I only have the green layers arrows selected in my layers palette - this means the yellow  arrow will not move.

Next, choose the Move Tool. Here are my settings:

After clicking the move too, you will get transform controls around your box, then once you use the mouse or keyboard arrows to move the scatter, the box will become smaller - to the bounds of the shape it is moving.

I moved my green arrow down to the bottom. I you wanted to, you could also remove it altogether, by pressing delete. So, if there is ever a pesky scatter too far out or in the way, just surround the area, and then delete. Be careful of surrounding scatters! :)

I decided to move some of the yellow scatters as well, and here is what I have after moving them around a little bit.

And my final layout. I also decided to delete some of the arrows of the scatters that were peeking out from under the photo. You might not notice it, but I did with a smidgen of corners, or darker shadows. This version is just a bit cleaner.

Hope you learned something new! Have a great time scrapping!

2015 Week 41: It'sFall & Some Extra Pages!

My Life Templates 11 by Scrapping with Liz
Everyday Life October by Juno Designs

I wasn't sure about using a fall colored kit for my weekly page (since my photos aren't all fall themed), but I think it worked really nicely with the photos I had. Plus when I flip through my finished album I'll instantly know these photos must be from October.  Don't you just love the fall colors?

Here's the journaling I have on my page.

A few pictures of our co-op corn maze trip & some sight seeing photos.

  • Nana and Grandpa Ralph came for a visit this week. We took them to Wayah Bald and up the Highlands Road to see all the waterfalls.
  • We took a trip to the corn maze with our co-op group.
  • Ashlyn had her last Volleyball game.
  • Matthew climbed to the top of the rope in gymnastics and drew some awesome pics!
  • We got the final inspection on our house! (no pics)

Before y'all leave I'll share another 2 pages I scrapped this week. This is for my mom's 2016 Calendar page. Only 2 more pages to go and I'll be able to print her calendar. This has been the best project and hopefully a great gift. I can't wait to see what it looks like printed out.

And here's one more for Matthew's album. My scrapping has been pretty limited lately since we are trying to finish our house and move in. Every spare minute has been spent working on that, but sometimes you just have to take a break and scrap a fun page. That's what this was.

ALL CAPS

Hi, it's Tiffany here, and I have an inspirational technique post for you. It's all about titles.

Liz is one of my favorite scrappers. Her pages are embellished but clean. She picks kits that complement her photos. And one of the things I've noticed lately is that she often uses all capital letters in her titles - both in her pages and in her templates.

Using all caps does not come naturally to me, which is why I noticed the trend in her templates. I asked Liz if she uses any guidelines for her title work. She admitted that she doesn't put much conscious thought into it but goes with what looks the most pleasing. However, we both looked through her templates and found some patterns, and I think they are great guidelines for title work.

Capital letters have straight lines and line up easily. They work well with page designs that also have strong lines. Here are two examples from Recyclables 40. Both pages have strong angled lines and the titles line up with the arrows.

Lowercase letters have a lot of curve and flow. They work well with page designs that have a lot of curves, or are more playful and clustered. Here are two examples from Recyclables 28. When I looked through all Liz's templates, I noticed that in templates with strong circular elements, she almost always uses lowercase titles.

Uppercase Letters are thick and bold. They work well when you want a title to stand out or provide a strong textual element to your page. Here are two examples from Recyclables 41. In both templates the title work plays a strong visual role in the design, and is the first element that draws my eye.

Lowercase letters, with their thinner size, will not compete with your photos. They can work well with large photo designs or pages with several blocked photos. Here are two examples from Keepin' It Real Double Templates.

These guidelines for using uppercase and lowercase titles are not hard and fast rules that you always have to follow. I think they give us some ideas about how titles work with the rest of a page. Sometimes we want our titles to be bold and stand out. Sometimes we will want our titles to take a lesser role so the photos are the star. And of course, if you ware working with alphas instead of fonts, you might be limited in what is available.

I want to leave you with some eye candy - that is, some of Liz's pages using uppercase and lowercase titles. First, here is a page with several blocked photos, which definitely are the focus of the page. The lowercase title stands out in the corner with its contrasting color work, but it doesn't distract from the photos.
Simple Journal Card Inspired Templates 1 by Scrapping with Liz; Chinese Takeout by mle Card

The following page uses an Artsy Journal template. Those designs are usually very playful and random, but this particular one has several photos in rows on the right hand side. The photos make for strong lines, and the all caps title work emphasizes those lines.
Artsy Journal Templates 4 by Scrapping with Liz; Merry and Bright by Bella Gypsy

Here is a page with a bold wavy line across the page, and the lowercase title work nicely flows along that curved edge.
Wavy Templates 1 by Scrapping with Liz; Storytime by Kristin Aagard

This page uses a bold uppercase title which quickly, and efficiently, tells you the topic of the page.

Keep these ideas in mind the next time you want to build a title that works well with your page design. Happy scrapping!
