Life with Liz - My Hair

I've been wanting to scrap a page about my hair for awhile and then when I saw the Time Capsule challenge over at Scrap Orchard was about hair I thought it was the perfect time to go ahead and make a page about it. Some of you have already seen this page but I thought I would show it to you again.

I decided to chop my hair off about 2 years ago. I've always had long hair so it was a BIG thing to chop it off. To be honest I liked the short hair for about 1 day! Then I decided having short hair was so much harder to do then having long hair. With long hair I can just gather it into a pony tail or let it be wavy. With short hair I had to style it every day....which I'm not into. So here's the page I made and every time I'm tempted and even just think about having short hair I'm going to look at this page and remember why I didn't like it.

Oh and this template was from the mystery challenge over at Scrap Orchard. It's free and there is still time to participate. Do you know you can earn points for participating in challenges and then get coupons to SO? You aren't allowed to use 1 layout for 2 challenges though but I incorporated both challenges in this one layout just for the fun of it. Have I mentioned how much I like challenges. When I have the time to participate in them I LOVE them. They stretch me and make me try new things.

Just click on the pic to get full credits. And don't forget to try out some challenges.

Life with Liz

Since this weekly post is a little bit about me and my life I thought I should answer the same questions that I ask my CT when I interview them for the "Getting to Know Liz's CT" blog posts. So here are my answers.
Why did you want to be on my team? Well....because it's awesome! LOL....but seriously my team is awesome. If it wasn't for them you wouldn't have all these fun blog posts to read. Just so you know, they came up with these questions. I'm so not creative when it comes to writing.

What is your scrapping style? Traditional/Simple....I guess. Sometimes I try to move out of my comfort zone but it's so hard.
What is your favorite color/why? Blue. The color of a clear sky and the ocean.....perfect!
If you had to choose between peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or macaroni and cheese which one would you choose? Definitely PB & J....anything with peanut butter.

What's your favorite zoo animal? Giraffe....mainly because this is my kids favorite animal. We used to go to the Jax zoo all the time and it was the first animal we always had to see.

Do you fold your underwear or just throw it in the drawer? Although I am an organizational freak I don't give a hoot about my underwear drawer so they just all get thrown in long as they are in there and the drawer is closed I'm good to go.
Do you snore? Talk in your sleep? Sleepwalk? Don't snore, don't sleepwalk but I do occasionally sit up in my sleep and say something random to my husband. All my girls talk in their sleep's pretty funny.
Are you a morning/night person? Definitely a morning person. Although I go through random spurts of staying up late and sleeping in and then after a week or two of that I realize I miss getting up early so then I'll start getting up early again.

What is your favorite book/movie? Book and Movie would be Pride and Prejudice....and although I like all versions of Pride and Prejudice my favorite is the BBC version. I have to watch it about once a month. I usually have it on in the background while I scrap.

Can you kill a spider? Yup!

Picky eater or eat anything? I'll pretty much try anything and I like most things.

Your favorite band/song? Hmmm...tough one. I'm not a huge music person. I usually listen to whatever my husband is into at the moment. But I guess NeedtoBreath has been my favorite lately. Although I just went to a David Crowder concert and I'm really digging his latest CD....I also love his older ones too.

Are you married? Yes, almost 11 years.
Do you have any children? 3 beautiful girls - Ashlyn 7, Emmie 5, Kyla 3
Team Edward or Team Jacob? Sorry fellow Twilighters but I'm just not into it. I have watched the first 2 so I'm not totally not into but not into it enough to really choose.

I'll show you my most recent favorite layouts. I think these 2 are my favorites right now.

This first one (I did this for a SO challenge a couple months ago) means a lot to me because in a couple of weeks I turn the big 3-0. So it helped me to reflect on my 20's and think of 29 things I love....and since I can still say it, I'll tell you I'm still in my 20's.....even if it is only for a couple more weeks.
I used my "Zine" Style Templates to make this page. Actually, no I take that back. I made this page and then a couple months later I made my "Zine" Templates and I took the inspiration from this page. You can click on the page for full credits.

Here's one I did just last week. I really like this one because I had so much remembering the fun time my husband and I had 1 year ago on our 10 year anniversary cruise. We'll be celebrating 11 years here in a couple weeks so it was fun to make and think about our anniversary. As you can see from my pages I love to use lots of photos and I almost always journal. I used my Goal Temps for this one.
Wow! I just noticed 4 similarities between my 2 pages above. Maybe we should play a little game. Leave a comment and let me know what the similarities are and I'll choose a winner to win a $5 coupon to my store....whadya say? I guess I just like this "look". Leave a comment and I'll come back and check later this week to see what you all could find.

Faded Masks Tutorial

Hello again my pretties!! I am back for the second time today to bring you yet another tutorial to go of the other new releases from Liz coming out this week. And just to tease ya even more, there are even more goodies than these two I have shown you! I am mean, I know.

This tutorial goes along with the Faded Masks Liz created. Masks are a super easy way to take an already great photo or paper and make it even more FAB! Just by clipping you can turn your photos or paper into amazing new shapes. I love how Liz added the “faded” effect to these masks to soften the edges. Here we go with the tutorial for Faded Masks….

Here is my completed layout and next I will walk you through how I used the mask….

First, I began by opening my background (brown) paper, the photo I wanted to work with, the mask of choice for this layout, and the paper to clip to the mask (yellow).

The next three screenshots show how I double clicked on the yellow paper to bring it into my workspace. Then I drug (or is it dragged..sorry) the yellow paper onto the black mask. Next I “clipped” the yellow paper on to the mask (previously shown in 3D tutorial) and finally I merged the two layers together to create just one layer.

Now, drag the yellow mask shape onto your background paper and position it where you want it.

Next, drag your photo onto your workspace. My photo was small when it was placed in the workspace but all I did was grab a corner of the photo and enlarged it until I knew it would cover the mask completely. In this case I actually moved the photo left until some of it was “off the page” completely.
Now, clip your photo to the yellow mask. Notice how you do not have the yellow glowing effect like I have in my completed layout? Don’t worry, I am getting to that:)

To achieve the yellow glow all I did was drag a 2nd yellow mask into my workspace and position it between the photo & brown background paper. I also widened the mask a little to make it stand out a little more than the photo.

So, there you have it………another tutorial to get you ready to use these smashing new releases from Liz this week. Isn’t learning fun? I think so!!!

Life with Liz - A Scrapbooking Treasure

Welcome to the first weekly edition of "Life with Liz". This is going to be a weekly post by myself (ScrappingwithLiz) and I'll be posting about all different kinds of things, my life, my layouts, etc... I guess the first thing that I should tell you is that I don't go by Liz in my "real" life. I go by Elizabeth. My mom never liked any of the nicknames for Elizabeth so I was always Elizabeth. When I started doing more stuff in forums, facebook, e-mails was always easier to just type Liz. So that is why I go by Liz in my "digi" life. It's kind of fun having "two" lives!

Anyway, on to today's subject. I was over at my moms and she had been going through some old photos, scrapbooks, etc... Well, as I was browsing through her stacks of photos I came across two older looking scrapbooks. So, of course, I had to take a peek. They were from my grandmother and they were dated 1966 and 1969....a 40 year old scrapbook! I was so excited. I knew scrapbooking must be in my genes. So I asked my mom if I could take them....not really sure what I was going to do with them but I knew I had to do something. I'm not even really sure what I should do with them or how I can preserve them. One of the scrapbooks is about travels that my Grandmother, Aunt, and Mom took through Michigan, Canada, and Montana. The other one, which is my favorite, is a scrapbook about a vacation my grandparents took with my mom when she was 9. My grandmothers journaling is on every page describing the pics, events, miles driven, places stayed, prices, etc...(it's wonderful). Plus there are pamphlets and postcards from their travels across the states. This is a real treasure. Here's a little peak into the scrapbook.

This is the first page of the scrapbook of my Grandparents and Mom's travels.
"We (Dad, Mom & Sara) left home at 5:30 a.m. on August 25-Thursday-1966. We ate our breakfast in Jackson, Minnesota at 8:30 in a beautiful wayside park. Crossed the state line into Iowa at 9:30. 192 miles. We stopped in Whiting to see Floyd, Jessie, Jonathan & Mary Louise but didn't find them home. We ate dinner in the park where we took this picture. 324 miles."
That's my mom on the swing.

That's my mom in the left photo and my grandparents in the right at Mount Rushmore (my mom took that photo).

This page brings back memories. Yes I know, I wasn't there, but my family took a trip out west when I was growing up and I remember us seeing signs for "Reptile Gardens." My sisters and I made up a goofy song about "Reptile Gardens" and I remember laughing about it hysterically. I don't remember if we actually went there but I do remember the song!

Here's the last page in the book.
That's my mom and her nieces and nephews in the photo to the left. My mom was the youngest by about 10 years in her family so she already had lots of nieces and nephews.
"Tuesday, Aug. 30. Crossed into Minnesota at Pipestone at 10:00 - 2207 miles. Stopped at Truman to see John, Marcia and Andy was quite hot driving - but not as bad as yesterday when we had to stop at that Motel for ice cubes for Sara. We drove in hard rain after leaving Hayfield - decided we have driven 2447 miles by the time we get home."

And here's the traditional school paper my mom had to write when she went back to school in the fall. You know, the one where you have to write about something you did during the summer.

My Vacation
My Mother and Dad and I went to Greeley Colorado to see the mountains.
We came up through Wyoming and South Dakota and saw the Badland and Mount Rushmore. Then we all got home last night.

I'm so glad that my grandmother preserved these memories (as best as she could) so that I can know more about my grandparents and mom's life. I want to do the same thing for my children and future grandchildren. Now I just need to figure out how to preserve these older scrapbooks so that I can pass them on.

Getting to Know Liz's CT - Today meet Tiffany

Welcome to "Getting to Know Liz's CT." Every month I'll be interviewing one of my CTM's and you'll get to know a little bit more about them.

Today I have Tiffany here to answer a few questions. She's been following me from almost the very beginning (2 years!) and was one of my very first Creative Team Members. So here are some fun, silly and serious questions I asked her.

Why did you want to be on my team?
I was a really big fan of your templates, and I used them often. I think my scrapping style goes very well with them. I had recently been accepted on my first team for another designer, and I was really enthusiastic about the idea of CT work. When you made your Scrap Orchard move I was really excited for you, but had been hoping, hoping, hoping your big announcement would have been a CT call - because I was totally going to apply!

What is your scrapping style?
I am pretty minimal, in that I don't do a lot of clustering, and I don't place a lot of elements on my pages - I generally stick to a couple papers and a couple elements. Lately I've been trying to make my layouts more meaningful to me by scrapping more about the memory/story instead of just showcasing a photo.

What is your favorite color/why?
Since I was young, I have always claimed that green is my favorite color. My brother recently asked me this same question, and after he heard the answer, he told me that "geniuses" often have green as their favorite color (he heard that somewhere). Now, I was in GATE when I was in elementary school, but the real reason that I say green is my favorite color is that when we were at the babysitter's house, and we kids would play board games, no on ever would pick the green piece (everyone wanted red and blue), and I didn't want green to feel bad, so I decided that I would always pick green.

If you had to choose between peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or macaroni and cheese which one would you choose?
At the moment, I would choose the mac and cheese. Unless it is Kraft Mac N' Cheese. I would never pick that.

What's your favorite zoo animal?
I have rarely been to the zoo, but we did go last summer, and the only thing that really interested me was the red panda because it was totally NOT what I was expecting, and it was pretty cute.

Do you fold your underwear or just throw it in the drawer?
I do fold my underwear, which is funny because I'm pretty haphazard with all the rest of the clothes. Now that I think about it, I think I started folding my underwear a couple years ago when I started using a clothes line to dry our clothes in the spring/summer/fall. The way I hang the underwear on the line (to maximize the amount of clothes I can get on there), they end up sort of warped, so I fold them to get them back in their normal shape. I guess it is an ingrained habit now, because I still do it when I use dryer.

Do you snore? Talk in your sleep? Sleepwalk?
I don't think I do any of these.

Are you a morning/night person?
I am a night person. I am at my most energetic between about 9 - 11 pm. Even if I've been dog tired all day, I totally perk up at 9pm. However, in the morning, once I'm awake, I'm awake. I don't have any problem getting out of bed, and I don't require coffee. Just being up on my feet for a few minutes and I'm fully awake and "functional." And I don't have the ability to take naps, either.

What is your favorite book/movie?
My favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo, and my favorite movie is the second X Men movie.

Can you kill a spider?
No, I cannot. The closest I can get to a spider is about 2 feet ... more like 3 feet, really, and then I will start yelping, breathing erratically, and shaking my hands.

Picky eater or eat anything?
I'm pretty picky, but after being with my husband (who really likes variety in his food), I've definitely broadened my food horizons. But I am very hesitant to try anything new, and generally when we go to restaurants, I will have a single dish that I will always order every time.
Your favorite band/song?
My favorite band is a rock/horror-punk band called The HorrorPops. My favorite song by them would be "Dotted With Hearts." But my favorite song ever is "Saturday Night" written by Michale Graves when he was in the band Misfits (the quintessential horror punk band). I'm not really into music myself, but my husband is REALLY into music (listening to it and collecting it - it's his equivalent to my digi scrapping addiction), and my taste in music has been greatly influenced by what he listens to.

Are you married?
I've been married for 7 years, and we've been together for ... about 10 years.

Do you have any children?
I have one son, Miller, who turned 3 in March. No plans now for any more. I think I started too old. I just turned 35.

Team Jacob or Team Edward (I had to ask this just for fun?)
I am most decidedly Team Jacob - from reading the books, but seeing the movie New Moon has only solidified that stance. I have not seen Eclipse - yet.

Show me one of your most recent favorite pages done with one of my temps.
I really liked this layout because I wrote about a topic that has been a big issue for us - getting Miller caught up on vaccines, and I had already scrapped a page about my vaccine fears and such - so I ended up with a before and after kind of thing, which made it really special to me. I used the Zine style temps and Propitious Perse by DeCrow and the SO June mega.
I decided I would show you one of my favorite pages from Tiffany. I absolutely LOVE this page. The picture, journaling, title, papers, quote, leaf, all of it just goes together so well.
She also used the Zine Style Templates with this one. I think they must be her style!
So I thought I would give you all a coupon for them just in case you haven't tried them out yet. They are so fun and you get lots of extras with them too. I have to admit, this is one of my favorite template sets. I made them for the May Digi Files and now they are available in my Scrap Orchard store. So here's a coupon code for you to get 40% OFF off my Zine Style Templates!

Enter this code at checkout: swlzncoup40

I hope you've enjoyed learning more about Tiffany. She's a fun gal and is a great help to my team. Next month I'll be interviewing the wonderful Ellie.

My Favorite Holiday

July 4th here in America is one of my favorite holidays. I think it's because friends and family always get together, we hang out outside, grill food, eat watermelon, watch fireworks, etc.... Lots of fun childhood memories. Plus I love American History and my 2nd grader (almost 3rd grader, *sniff, sniff*) and I have read a lot about the founding of this country this year in school and it gives me an even greater appreciation of Independence Day and what people went through to give me freedom here in this country.

So here's a little freebie for you. I thought this might help you out with your July 4th pages (or whatever you want to use them for!). I took some star scatters from my Scatter Swirls, Scatter Bursts, and Scatter Waves. All CU by the way, you can easily clip paper to them, add a style, etc... Just click on the pic as usual. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend celebrating, or whatever else it is you are doing.
